Guillaume brings new meaning to the phrase ‘cutting-edge’ performance. Prior to graduating from business school and entering the investment-management field, he was a world-class figure skater. Derek was born and raised in Calgary. He demonstrated an interest in learning French early on, enrolling in a French-immersion program and continuing to study French while earning a degree in economics and business at the University of Calgary. It seemed inevitable that Derek would wind up working for a firm based in Canada’s predominantly French-speaking metropolis. He began his career as a bilingual client-service representative for a leading Canadian financial institution, before obtaining his mutual funds license and transitioning to a client-facing role, where his leadership potential was quickly recognized, resulting in subsequent promotions. Derek joined Fiera Capital in 2011 as Manager, Client Services in Calgary and, here too, has rapidly climbed the ranks. He was appointed Vice President, Business Administration and Client Support in January 2015, and assumed the duties of General Manager of the firm’s Calgary Office in late 2016.

Miriam Legrand
Miriam Legrand
Vice President, Corporate Credit Research

The Fiera Capital culture is such that we are always seeking ways to challenge our intellect and stay ahead of the curve. For instance, we recently developed our own in-house approach to socially responsible investing that entailed creating a proprietary scoring model for all corporate issuers. It’s a very stimulating environment.

Armed with an MBA in Finance from the Fordham Graduate School of Business and a B.A. in Economics from New York University (NYU), Miriam’s career path led her initially to positions with several insurance companies, where she worked in different capacities across fixed income, most notably in corporate debt, emerging markets and mortgage-backed securities. She relishes the fact that her current role at Fiera Capital, which entails approving companies for taxable high-grade strategies, gives her the opportunity to have a voice in investment discussions across different areas of the firm. “Cross-collaboration amongst team members is highly valued here. As a member of various committees and working groups, I am able to bring forward insights and analyses based on my interaction with issuers that I believe contribute to our overall performance.”

Fiera Capital is fast paced and constantly evolving. It’s an exhilarating environment. Although I’m arguably still learning on the job, the firm entrusts me with important new projects. They show a lot of faith in their people – even those just starting out.

Contemplating her education and career options prior to university, Claude decided that her strong math skills likely would serve her well in the field of finance. In 2010, after obtaining her B. Comm. from Montreal’s Concordia University, she joined Fiera Capital in a temporary role as Analyst, Institutional Markets. “I quickly realized that, despite my degree, I really didn’t know much about finance,” Claude concedes. “Fortunately, I found myself surrounded by high-calibre people…my manager took me under her wing and taught me a lot.” Evidently a quick study, Claude parlayed her temporary status into a permanent position after just three months and, by 2015, had been promoted to a management position. Looking back over the firm’s recent rapid growth, Claude is proud to have played a role in helping build Fiera Capital’s Institutional Team.

While studying economics at the University of Guelph, Marc decided that he wanted to work in financial services – but wasn’t entirely sure how to get there. After obtaining his degree, he found a job with a large well-known fund administrator, which proved to be a great way to get a foothold in the industry. “I made it my goal to advance my experience and knowledge to the point where I would be able to work on the client side for an investment- management firm.”  That opportunity presented itself in 2013, when Marc started at Fiera Capital as a Senior Portfolio Administrator. A chance to move up the ladder was not long in coming: later that same year, he was promoted to Supervisor, Derivatives Administration and, in 2016, he moved up again to his current role. Marc concedes that the new title (see above) is quite a mouthful, “but it was the perfect opportunity to draw on my previous experience to lead a team that brings value to the company every day in a niche area.”
